World Diabetes Day
Diabetes currently affects 246 million people worldwide and projections by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) project this figure will rise to 380 million in less than 2 decades.
As the prevalence of diabetes increases the knowledge and understanding of doctors remains key to earlier diagnosis and more effective management to reduce complications and their co-morbidities, which have major consequences for patients, society and for health budgets.
World Diabetes Day, each year since it's inception in 1991, has sought to highlight a particular area in which to raise awareness and focus effort. The theme of this year's campaign is "No child should die of diabetes". Whist access to medicines is a fundamental issue for some children which must be addressed, raising awareness of the signs and symptoms to facilitate early diagnosis and especially effective long-term management is vital in the avoidance of the potentially debilitating consequences of poor diabetes management.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Diabetes is designed to develop competence in the diagnosis, treatment and decision making involved in the management of people with diabetes. The course will equip clinicians with up to date relevant and evidence-based information together with the skills necessary to develop strategies to engage with new technologies and treatments. Through fostering a culture of training and development in a global context the course encourages leadership and evaluation skills and provides an opportunity to develop care pathways and related materials on all aspects of diabetes care.
Applications for the 2009 Postgraduate Diabetes Diploma Course are now open. Set yourself the goal of getting your application in before November 14th 2008, because knowledge changes things.
